Chiropractic Care for Proper Development for Infants, Adolescents and Teens

A developing child requires support in nutrition, athletics and a proper functioning nervous system. Dr. Magwood highly prioritizes care for young people in his practice. His Spinal Workshops approach human function on multiple levels and emphasize the process of development from conception onward.

Young developing spines are highly susceptible to trauma from various activities and events. The health of a child relates specifically to birth trauma, the impacts of childhood, nutritional deficits, emotional struggle, and many other forms of stress on the body. The challenge is to minimize these forces while strengthening the body’s ability to adapt to them. These traumas can shift the position of vertebrae of the spine, placing severe pressure on delicate spinal nerves. This is called subluxation and the result is a profound decrease in the body’s ability to function normally. Although symptoms such as pain and malfunction may not show up for years, injury to their vital nervous system can have a lifetime of damaging effects.

The Importance of Checking Your Child’s Spine

Children should be checked right after birth because of the potential damaging effects of the birth process. Moms are certainly aware of the stress of giving birth, but even natural uncomplicated births result in trauma to the infant. The brief pediatric check-up is not designed to detect the possible “hidden damage” a chiropractic exam would discover. Studies show that many children who experience symptoms of colic, ear-infections and asthma have spinal subluxations impairing their nervous system function.

Early detection and correction can prevent layers of damage from occurring in the child’s vital nervous system. If left unchecked, this damage is compounded through years of negative adaptations and compensating habits, leading to prolonged care and treatment later in life.

Is Chiropractic for Children Safe?

The force used during the adjustment of a newborn is a fraction of what is experienced during the birthing process. Even a natural birth process subjects the neck of a newborn to 40 pounds of traction or torsion. The newborn adjustment requires only few ounces of carefully directed pressure in the right direction at precisely the right time. Parents can feel confident about the safety of chiropractic for their child.

Chiropractors that care for children have special training in their care and understand the clinical considerations and needs that children have. Dr. Magwood has received specific and specialized training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, in a program of care addressed to the challenges of newborn and childhood subluxations.

International Chiropractic Pediatric Association
