Pediatric Conditions

Nutrition Consultations with Health & Nutrition Coach Caryn O’Sullivan

Conditions that are common in pediatric patients that have resolved, like ear infections, are the results of the body functioning more optimally. Below we have listed some of the more common therapies for children that visit our Pediatric Chiropractic Facility in Clifton, New Jersey

Asthma

While breathing, your body takes in air which passes through the nose, the windpipe and the bronchi.

It is then filtered, purified, cleansed, warmed and humidified before it enters your lungs. This all happens under the guidance of your nervous system. Allergies, stress, pollen or pollution can bring on life-threatening attacks.

The body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. As long as the nervous system is allowed to function with no interference, the body should function normally. However, some of the vertebrae in the spine become misaligned and affect how the nervous system controls the body.

By correcting these subluxations, Dr. Michael Magwood can eliminate interference to the nervous system, allowing the body to function normally – drug free. Many patients greatly reduce or eliminate their dependency on prescription medications through the chiropractic alternative. If you are tired of taking medications daily to alleviate your symptoms, try chiropractic care.

Infantile Colic

Of all the health challenges that seem to plague infants, colic is the most upsetting. It can drive mommy to tears just as fast as the child.

All the common neighborly and family advice seems to be unsuccessful. Colic tends to start around the second or third week of life and can last for months, at any time of the day or night, with no apparent rhyme or reason.

Colic is characterized by constant crying, screaming, whining, pain in the stomach area, and acute irritability. The constant crying can lead to a condition called Aerophagia – the swallowing of air.

Aerophagia causes swelling of the bowels which creates more pain, crying and Aerophagia. One cause for infantile colic is vertebral subluxation. Simply put, it is a misalignment of spinal vertebrae that causes a restriction of one or more nerve pathways emanating from the spinal cord that controls bowel function. This can cause food to stick around in the large intestine longer than it should and can cause an uncomfortable quantity of gas to build up in the child’s digestive system. This causes the baby’s excessive crying because it is their only way to ask for help.

Children with colic generally show wonderful response to the hands of a chiropractor. Most often, results are seen with the correction of the subluxation which is the root of the problem. If you or someone you know has a child with colic, refer them to Dr. Michael Magwood in New York City, a chiropractor with pediatric experience, to have a spinal check-up right away.

Pediatric Ear Infection

We hear a lot about childhood ear infections (otitis media). This is very frightening to parents mostly because the infections appear suddenly, usually at night and with little warning.

The most common treatments used for ear infections are antibiotics, decongestants, and tympanostomy (tubes in the ears.) You may be surprised to find that the benefits of all these remedies are highly questionable.

Dr. Michael Magwood’s experience has shown him that ear infections can be a malfunction of the immune system, resulting in a lowered resistance. In other words, the child’s immune system is not able to fight off or prevent the infection. Besides, if your child’s infection is caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t help the problem, but will have other adverse side effects. Plus they prevent the body from developing a strong immune system. Tubes in the ears may temporarily address the symptom, but not the underlying cause.

Your best, safest solution is to ensure your child’s immune system is working at its optimum level. A pediatric chiropractor can make sure your child’s spine is aligned so that their nervous system is functioning at its highest level. This will give the immune system its best chance for optimum development.

Scoliosis Detection and Care

Scoliosis is the lateral deviation (sideways curving) of the spine and commonly affects children and adolescents. 4% of children aged 10-14 have detectable scoliosis. 60-80% of those affected are girls. While most cases of childhood and adolescent scoliosis stop progressing once spinal maturity is reached, progression of the curve past spinal maturity is not common.
